Special to NHRA.com 5/2/2006 Rising NHRA Top Fuel star Morgan Lucas met his NASCAR hero, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tuesday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway during a test session building up to the Nextel all-star race and the Memorial Day weekend running of the longest race on the NASCAR circuit, the Coca-Cola 600.
“That was something I had always wanted to do,” said a smiling Lucas. “I was a big fan of his dad, and to meet Dale Jr. was a thrill. I know he was very busy, but he took time out of his testing schedule in between runs to say hello. My PR guy, Jay Wells, has known his family for a long time and set up the meeting.”
Lucas and the legion of NHRA crews descending this week upon Race City, USA, are getting a taste of the stock car life. The area is between Bristol, site of last weekend’s O’Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by Q, and Atlanta Dragway, site of this weekend's Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac.
“When I was looking at the schedule for this year, I noticed we had Bristol and Atlanta back to back, so I knew I was going to make a stop through the heart of NASCAR country,” said Lucas. “Just to see all the equipment laid out was impressive, and most teams were testing two cars. The pace was a little different, but it was still amazing to see their technology and how they use it.”
Lucas will roll into Atlanta Dragway, site of his first Budweiser No. 1 qualifiying position, sixth in the NHRA POWERade standings.
