AARON'S 499 TALLADEGA PRE-PRACTICE BACKGROUND This is the ninth race of 36 for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series in 2004
This is the 66th time that NASCAR'S top series has competed with carburetor restrictor plate equipped engines.
Six drivers have competed in all the plate races to date; Terry Labonte, Mark Martin, Ricky Rudd, Ken Schrader, Rusty Wallace, and Michael Waltrip.
47 drivers are entered to compete for one of the 43 starting positions in Sunday's race.
Nine drivers will attempt to make the field for both the Busch Series and NEXTEL Cup Series events this weekend; Johnny Sauter, Robby Gordon, Greg Biffle, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Joe Nemechek, Michael Waltrip, Derrike Cope, and Johnny Benson.

NEXTEL CUP TOP-10 RECAP
Dale Earnhardt Jr., finished third at Martinsville, his fifth top-five finish in 2004, the most of all drivers. He climbed from third to first in the standings and is now the leader by five points over Kurt Busch. He was second in the Top 10 at this point of the season one year ago. Earnhardt Jr., has competed in eight races at Talladega with four victories and six top-10 finishes. Five were finishes of first or second which all occurred in the last five races. Earnhardt Jr. finished first in this race one year ago and second here last September.
Kurt Busch finished 11th at Martinsville and dropped from first to second in the standings. History repeated itself with Busch holding on to the top spot for just one race. He also held the top spot for one race after Rockingham in 2003. Busch has five top-10 finishes this season. All of his finishes have been 16th or better. He was third in the Top 10 at this point of the season one year ago. Busch has competed in six races at Talladega, with four top-10 finishes. He finished 19th in this race one year ago and sixth here last September.
Matt Kenseth finished eighth at Martinsville and dropped from second to third in the standings ¿ now just 12 points behind first-place. Kenseth has ranked in the Top 10 since Rockingham in 2003, 43 straight races. He is one of three drivers to start the 2004 season with six top-10 finishes in the first eight races. Kenseth has competed in eight races at Talladega - with just three top-10 finishes here. His best Talladega finish (fourth) was in October 2001. Kenseth has led at least one lap in each of his eight races at Talladega. He finished ninth in this race one year ago and 33rd here last September.
Jimmie Johnson finished fourth at Martinsville and climbed from sixth to fourth in the standings. Johnson has five top-10 finishes in 2004. He was fourth in the Top 10 at this point of the season one year ago. Johnson has competed in just four races at Talladega with just one top-10 finish. His best Talladega finish (seventh) was in this race two years ago. He finished 15th in this race one year ago and 34th here last September.
Elliott Sadler finished 12th at Martinsville and remained fifth in the standings. He has four top-10 finishes in 2004. He was 10th in the standings at this point of the season one year ago. Sadler has competed in nine races at Talladega with just one top-10 finish, third in this race one year ago. All eight of his other Talladega finishes were 17th or worse. He finished 30th here last October.
Tony Stewart finished 14th at Martinsville and dropped from fourth to sixth in the standings. Stewart has four top-10 finishes in 2004. He was ninth in the standings at this point of the season one year ago. Stewart has competed in 10 races at Talladega, with six top-10 finishes and has finished second or third in four of his last six races at Talladega. Stewart has not led in his last five races at Talladega. He finished 25th in this race one year ago and third here last September.
Jeff Gordon finished sixth at Martinsville and climbed from ninth to seventh in the standings. He is one of three drivers with six top-10 finishes in 2004. He was fifth in the standings at this point of the season one year ago. Gordon has won twice in 22 races at Talladega and has 12 top-10 finishes, including four of his last five races here. His last Talladega victory occurred in this race in 2000. Gordon has led in 17 of his 22 races at Talladega.
Rusty Wallace won at Martinsville and climbed from 11th to eighth in the standings. Wallace was 18th in the standings at this point one year ago. Wallace has five top-10 finishes in 2004. He has competed in 41 races at Talladega with top-10 finishes in 12 races here. He has led in 18 races at this track. He finished 37th in this race one year ago and ninth here last September. Wallace has never won a restrictor-plate race.
Kasey Kahne finished 21st at Martinsville and dropped from seventh to ninth in the standings. Kahne has four top-five finishes this season. Kahne is looking to make his first NASCAR NEXTEL Cup start at Talladega.
Kevin Harvick finished 19th at Martinsville and dropped from eighth to 10th in the standings. Harvick was ranked eighth at this point of the season last year. Harvick has three top-10 finishes in 2004. He has competed in six races at Talladega with two top-10 finishes - both races in 2003. He has led in his last three races at this track. He finished second in this race one year ago, his best finish at Talladega and seventh here last September.
