A Simple Thank You
This brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat.
Wonder if the Hollywood crowd would like to see this. God Bless America and our folks who wear the uniform.
WHAT WE DONT SEE ON THE NEWS.
Here's one that will make you blink....
A Simple Thank You
A very touching story!
Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together. After wed boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who,d been invited to sit in First Class (and was seated across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.
No, he responded.
Heading out? I asked.
No. Im escorting a soldier home.
Going to pick him up?
No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq. Im taking him home to his family.
The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didnt know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldiers family and felt as if he did know them after so many conversations in so few days. I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do.
Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom.
Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door [so as to] allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign.
Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American. So heres a public Thank-you to our military for doing what you do so we can live the way we do.

Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News
When 2nd Lt. James Cathey's body arrived at the Reno Airport, Marines climbed into the cargo hold of the plane and draped the flag over his casket as passengers watched the family gather on the tarmac. During the arrival of another Marine's casket last year at Denver International Airport, Major Steve Beck described the scene as one of the most powerful in the process: See the people in the windows? They'll sit right there in the plane, watching those Marines. You gotta wonder what's going through their minds, knowing that they're on the plane that brought him home," he said." They're going to remember being on that plane for the rest of their lives. They're going to remember bringing that Marine home. And they should." -----------------------
Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News
The night before the burial of her husband's body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of 'Cat,' and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. "I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it," she said. "I think that's what he would have wanted."

Thanks Heavy for this bit of info ... Both my oldest son and my son-in-law retired from the navy ...They both have had the "duty" of accompanying the body of a comrad to their final resting place ... It is a very somber occasion...I've attended several of these burials ... May they all rest in peace... GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS AND THEIR FAMILIES

Thank You Heavy for this post. I too had the tears and lump as I read it. God Bless our Troops and their families
One time I was talking to a person from another country that was here in the USA visiting. He said he was amazed at how many Americans were so proud to display their Country's flag. I told him we are very proud of our country and our troops.

Now while I don't support our being in Iraq, I do support our troops. I put the Iraqi situation on our government not the soldiers who are there. Just this past week, one of my hometown boys was brought back from Iraq. I'm pasting an excerpt of the news account.
HUDSONVILLE -- As people filled the Hudsonville Reformed Church to say goodbye to Sergeant First Class Rick Herrema, a massive show of support for Herrema's family was outside the church trying to hide a small group of protestors.
Many of the people attending didn't know Herrema. They came to show their support because another group of strangers were across the street, protestors who target soldier's funerals.
On Wednesday, the state Senate unanimously approved legislation intended to stop protestors from disrupting funerals for soldiers killed in Iraq. The bills are expected to reach Gov. Jennifer Granholm's desk as early as next week, and would go into effect immediately.
U.S. Congressman Mike Rogers has a similar bill that will be voted on by the House next week.
I can't believe the gall of some people, disrupting a funeral to protest. There is a time and a place for dissent and a funeral is definately NOT the place. My nephew, God bless him, is serving in the Air Force and is soon to be sent to Kuwait with a supply company.
Come home safe Jeremy! |

This is Thunder, not FC, so I don't think you need to worry about anybody dumping on you over it, or, going to their clubhouse message board to trash talk you behind your back. |

Woods, I understood exactly what you meant to say, This topic was sent to me from my cousin who is a sharpshooter in the Army, he is going back to Iraq, after only being home for 13 months, he lost his best buddy, while he was over there his 1st time, though he is happy to go back, he has a new wife now, not to mention a new baby, whole family is try'na talk him out of it, But he said there is unfinished business for him over there, I just pray that he & all his/OUR fellow soldiers make it home safely, And Bru, I agree with you also, 100%, I'm no basher, but I think it's time to get out, But I think we're dug in so deep (The Prez's doing) that No other President will be able to straighten this out, (I hope I'm wrong) But something must be wrong, when half his staff is resigning. To all our Troops be safe, and return home safe ... Peace quote: Originally posted by Woods Racing
