Posted - 04/18/2005 : 9:17:30 PM Why are all the established drivers retiring and leaving their fans to find someone else to cheer for. Rusty...Mark...Ken...Terry...Dale J. (Shane says he ain't got long to go) and the list goes on. I don't know why they can't just keep on racing till all their fans die off, but guess that won't work so for many guess it time to start thinking bout pickin a new driver. I gave it some thought and decided its a lot like pickin a new dog for us dog lovers. So I've done some research on what goes into pickin new pet, or in this case driver. You probably can plug in dog for driver in the sentence if your lookin for a dog.
If your old driver isn't gonna be in the hunt any more guess the first thing would be to consider wheather to get a pup (Carl E., Kasey Kahne, etc) or a mature dog (Tony S., Jeff G., Jeff B., etc) Mark or Rusty for Tony or Carl would be logical choices.
Next thing listed was blood lines. If you want a pure blood looks like this might be a Petty... Earnhardt.... Andretti... Wallace ... Jarrett etc. If you want a pure blood someone in this group might be a good choice. Mixed breed would be the other choice and in many cases will be the better driver. May in some cases not be quite as high strung.
Temperment is another very important choice. He's gonna be yours to care for. Some drivers require more attention than others. Seems some drivers want to pee on everything they see, and have a desire to get in scraps pretty often. While others are better behaved and more easy to train. Is he good with kids? Does he play well with the other drivers.
Male or female is a choice as well, although in this case the female selections may be limited.
Breed will be inportant to some. So far Chevy...Ford... Dodge and blue tick are some choices. There may be other breeds to choose from in the future. Also might look at what kennel they came from....California, Carolina's, Midwest etc
Physical Characteristics.....Large (Mikey, D.J. etc) Small (Mark, Jason L. etc) Short haired.....Casey, Mark etc Long Haired......Elliott S., Mikey, Junior etc. Cute....Kasey Kahne, Jamie M. etc Rugged....Tony S., J.J. etc.
Many things to consider, but for me kind of like pickin a good hunting dog. If your going to get one that will hunt sometimes you have to give up a little on the other end. I'll probably always look for one that will hunt first and then hope to get one that has several good qualities on top of that.

Posted - 04/19/2005 : 3:19:58 PM Unfortunatly As Mark Martin, once said recently, Nascar is now more Entertainment, and requires a lot of the driver's time and racing is actully turning into a side line. If it was not for all the appearances that Driver's must do to fulfill their contracts, I would stay in it longer, but as it is these days it is a young man's sport!!!

Posted - 04/19/2005 : 10:21:43 AM I had no choice with my last two dogs. Sheba was just supposed to stay with me for a couple of hours which turned into 12 years and Kelly was left in my back yard by the same person who wanted me to look after Sheba for 2 hours. Kelly is now 12 1/2 years old and I find myself sometimes thinking about life without her which really bums me out. I'm going to be very lost when she dies.
Must be something wrong with me - I haven't had a favorite driver since Cale retired.
